How to Become a Security Guard: A Career Guide

In the last year, shoplifting and theft have increased in big and small businesses alike. Many owners are struggling, especially since they often can’t count on law enforcement to help.

While the demand for security guards has always been somewhat high, this increase in crime has driven the demand up even further. This makes this career path very attractive for those who are choosing a career path.

If you’re now wondering how to become a security guard, then read on. Here’s a brief guide to get you right on track.

How to Become a Security Guard

If you haven’t gone on to university after high school, then good news! Security guard jobs usually only require that you have a high school diploma or GED, so if you’ve already got one, you’re set. Otherwise, you’ll want to take the GED test before you go any further.

However, you should make sure you’re physically able to handle this job. You must be able to handle high-stress situations, have good interpersonal skills so you can de-escalate things, and also have good physical strength and stamina to defend yourself if needed.

Get Your Security Guard License

In some states, you’ll need a security guard license. This is especially true if the job you’re looking at will have you using a firearm.

To get this license, you must be at least 18 years old (for casino security, you’ll have to be at least 21). You’ll go through rigorous training and you must pass that and a background check to get your license.

Apply to Jobs

Now, you’re ready to apply for security guard jobs. Expect the jobs to pay between $11.50 to $20.00 an hour, depending on where you live.

If you have prior experience in a related field, then there’s a chance your employer will pay you more as well.

Receive On-the-Job Training

After you’ve been hired, you’ll need to go through on-the-job training before you can officially work shifts.

The hours of training will depend on the exact job you have. For example, you might have to be educated about the uses and benefits of bulletproof vests if you’re working security for a bank.

In any case, most states recommend 8 to 16 hours of training, in addition to 8 hours of annual training. However, some jobs can have months of training, such as in the casino industry.

Good Luck Becoming a Security Guard

Now that you know how to become a security guard, you’re well on your way to an exciting new career. Becoming a security guard doesn’t take higher education either, so if you already have your high school diploma or GED, almost all the hard work’s out of the way already!
