Facebook Rebrands to Meta and Here’s Why

Facebook is a social media giant. Everyone knows how useful it is when it comes to interacting with your friends, family, and even strangers on the platform. People have become really attached to it. In fact, it’s hard to imagine passing the time without scrolling through your news feed. And if the internet starts to act up, they instantly call their ISPs service number like the Cox customer service number. After all, they need their internet fixed so they may get back on the platform.

Today, Facebook is not exactly what one thought it was. You see, the company recently rebranded itself to Meta. And when it did, the founder of the company, Mark Zuckerberg, shared a video explaining his vision for the future, which sure left many scratching their heads. If you are one of them, then don’t worry! Continue reading, and you will know why Facebook did what it did.

What Happened?

On October 28, Facebook, which also owns WhatsApp and Instagram, rebranded as Meta. During the annual connect conference of the company, Mark Zuckerberg said that the brand is so tightly linked to one product that it can’t fully showcase everything that the company is doing. He further said that in the coming years, he would like Facebook to be recognized as a Metaverse company. Zuckerberg wants to anchor his identity and work on what he and his team are building towards.

Do note that the names of WhatsApp and Instagram are not being changed. It’s just the name of the company that maintains them that is getting altered to Meta. With this announcement, the company has also changed its logo.

Metaverse, What’s That?

Is the term “Metaverse” new to you? If yes, then you are not alone! Well, the metaverse is a shared 3D space that different companies are interested in creating. This will be the future of the internet. Zuckerberg explained it best in the video. According to him, you will be able to teleport instantly as a hologram wherever you want in the metaverse, whether it is your office or at a concert with your friend. However, do note that this is just a glimpse of the future. This is not happening now. You can think of metaverse as an interactive world of the famous video games Second Life and The Sims.

Why Is Facebook Changing to Meta?

Let’s clear one thing; Meta will not be just a social media platform. In fact, it is going to be much bigger than that! According to Anupam Chander, it is all about owning the operating system of the future. Facebook doesn’t want to be a prisoner of others’ platforms. Instead, it wants others to be their users.

In the announcement, Meta did mention that it did not want a single company (Apple) to control everything and then charge high fees for it. However, Max Van Kleek is a bit skeptical of this statement. He said that it would be unlikely that Meta would give up its position as the advertisement provider of the metaverse.

What Will Happen If Meta Succeeds?

If Meta succeeds and their vision of the future becomes a reality, then brace yourself as the company would start to play an important role in your lives. The whole world will start to rely on Meta for their metaverse needs. However, remember that the company has faced issues with its key apps, which led to the removal of the ability to communicate for large parts of the world. And if such a thing is to happen again in the metaverse, then the consequences could be huge!

Taina Bucher sounds a bit off on Meta. She says that the whole representation of the metaverse is so naive and that not everyone will be thrilled to have it in their home space.

Conclusion

Mark Zuckerberg has made a bold move by rebranding Facebook as Meta. Although the visions shared by the company sound exciting, it truly would be interesting to see if they come true in the future or not. Metaverse is a fascinating concept that has taken over the world after Zuckerberg made his announcement. The virtual space will be amazing with so many possibilities that normal life will become boring. But will any of this materialize? Time will tell!
