The Life Expectancy of U.S. Males, 2021

If there’s one thing that most of us probably don’t like to give a lot of thought to, it’s life expectancy. Still, it’s a reality that we all must face.

Life expectancy is the average amount of years that we are expected to live. This is oftentimes broken down into different demographics including ethnicity, location, and gender. For instance, Hawaii has one of the highest mortality rates in the country and Kentucky has one of the lowest.

Are you curious about the life expectancy US male individuals have? If so, this article will answer that and a few other questions for you.

What Is the Mortality Rate of the American Male?

When it comes to the life expectancy of men in the United States back in 2021, reportedly it was 76.62 years. That was a drop from previous years by about 2.26 years.

As far as mortality data goes, Black men have the highest mortality rate. Hispanic males are not far behind.

Meanwhile, the life expectancy of women in the United States in 2021 was 81.2 years. So, why is it that women tend to live five years longer than men do?

Things That Cause Men to Die Faster than Women Do

There are several different factors that can cause men to die faster than women. Some of them include the following:

  • Men work more dangerous jobs
  • Men typically take greater risks
  • Men are larger (bigger mammals have a greater mortality rate than smaller ones)
  • Men have a higher heart disease risk (in part, due to having less estrogen in their system)
  • Men have a greater cancer risk
  • Men commit suicide more often
  • Men do not go to the doctor as much

All of these things play a significant role in why the mortality rate is higher for men than women. The good news is several things can be done to add more years onto a man’s life.

Life Expectancy: US Male Individuals Can Do the Following for a Longer Life

If you’re a man reading this, you might think that your only recourse is to do some immediate estate planning. That way, you can prepare yourself for the inevitable. However, there are several steps you can take to add some years onto your life:

  • See your doctor annually
  • Consume a healthy diet
  • Exercise three to five times a week
  • Have more (safe) sex (sex reduces cortisol levels and is a great form of exercise)
  • If you’re feeling depressed, speak with a reputable therapist or counselor
  • Reduce your alcohol intake
  • Don’t smoke
  • Spend more time with your friends (socializing can increase your mortality rate)
  • Avoid risks that can put your life in danger
  • De-stress

All of these are things that you can do whether you’re a high-income male or someone who makes less money. That’s because many of them don’t require spending more money than you already have. You simply need to make certain life adjustments.
